Enriching biodiversity

Biodiversity is reflected in our concrete work. Our work focuses on land areas, water and material flows, where we can reduce environmental impact and support the recovery of nature in practice. We replace virgin raw materials with recycled materials and reduce the need for new land use by remediating areas for redevelopment.

The circular economy plays a key role in mitigating biodiversity loss

Circular economy solutions can effectively combat nature loss. The importance of the circular economy in curbing nature loss is based on the fact that materials would circulate efficiently, in which case untouched nature and its resources would need to be used as little as possible.

Water treatment returns water safely back into circulation

Water treatment and returning water back into circulation play an essential role in preserving biodiversity. We help our customers minimise water emissions generated by their operations through our mobile water treatment solutions. We continuously seek new ways to reduce water use in our own operations and ensure that wastewater discharged from our facilities does not exceed permitted limits.

Land remediation returns land areas to use

We clean up and restore contaminated sites and create new habitats. We treat contaminated soils and safely dispose of hazardous materials in an environmentally sound and resource‑efficient manner. We establish nature‑supporting meadows and wetlands in waste management sites and other industrial environments. Our work reduces environmental impact and enables nature to recover.

Remediation

We remediate contaminated soils and restore land areas for reuse. Remediation enables nature to recover and reduces environmental impact.

Water treatment

We treat wastewater generated in industry and construction and reduce its pollutant load. This improves the condition of water bodies and helps preserve biodiversity.

Recycling and reuse of secondary materials

We make efficient use of industrial side streams and mineral materials received from construction projects, reducing the need for virgin natural resources.

New circular economy solutions

We continuously develop new solutions to ensure that as large a share as possible of the materials we receive can be directed to reuse and recycling.

Innovations and indicators support impactful nature work

Promoting biodiversity is an increasingly important theme in corporate and urban responsibility. Preserving biodiversity requires research and practical tools to be truly impactful and comparable.

L&T is running a research and development project from 2024 to 2026 to develop a model for calculating the value of restoring contaminated land and environmental construction solutions. The project is part of the EBITDA consortium project, led by the University of Tampere, studying corporate responsibility choices and the creation of value through environmental sustainability. The project is funded by Business Finland.
